World Bee Day

On Monday, 22 May, Vienna International School (VIS) joined the world in celebrating World Bee Day 2023.

The Eco School organisation and UNESCO declared that day as the Biodiversity Day and Ecosystem Restoration to be celebrated worldwide on 22 May.

During the morning break, the VIS students of Early Learning Centre and Grade Primary celebrated the school’s commitment towards the protection of bees and other pollinators worldwide, by dancing the Bee Dance and displaying the investigations they have been doing about bees over the past weeks.

During the past months, the Primary School Green Teams have been creating items to sell during World Bee Day. The earnings will help them buy trees supporting the restoration of tropical rainforest worldwide (https://onetreeplanted.org/collections/where-we-plant). This organisation is an official partner of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2023 (https://www.decadeonrestoration.org/).

Under the theme “Bee engaged in pollinator-friendly agricultural production”, the Food and Agriculture  Organization (FAO) invited us to highlight the importance of protecting bees and other pollinators. As an action, the Grade 4 Green Team, lead by Ms. Maddy Peltier, had a meeting with Mr. Andrew Warren (the Catering Team) to suggest a system that can help reduce food waste at the cafeteria. The Catering company will next work on implementing the proposed idea and on measuring its impact.

We would like to further invite our community to join efforts towards the protection of local urban-pollinators. Some small but effective actions include planting pollinator-friendly plants and locating them on your balcony, terrace or garden. A second possible action is building an insect hotel, where pollinators could hibernate during winter.

Be(e) part of the global movement to protect biodiversity and secure food for all of us!
