Student Fundraiser for Turkey/ Syria earthquake

Grade 9 students at VIS have come together to organise a meaningful initiative aimed at supporting the victims of the devastating Türkiye/Syria earthquake, which occurred in February 2023.

This earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, resulted in the displacement of over 2.2 million individuals who are still struggling to rebuild their lives. Tragically, the earthquake claimed the lives of over 50,000 people, each with their own dreams, hopes, and families.

In an effort to provide assistance and contribute to the relief efforts, the Grade 9 students have planned a bake sale on April 27th in the VIS Mall. The bake sale features a variety of treats, including both Turkish delicacies and other delectable baked goods. All proceeds from the sale will be directed towards AFAD, the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency, a humanitarian aid organisation actively working in Türkiye to support those affected by the earthquake. The students have also set up donation collection points in buckets located in both the Mall and the Octagon, for the students who wish to contribute but may not have spare change on hand.

The motivation behind this fundraising initiative stems from the profound impact the disaster had on the students. Their understanding of the tragedy deepened further after hearing the first hand account of Nural Sümbültepe, a courageous woman who lost family members in the earthquake. Nural visited VIS and shared her personal experiences, allowing the students to empathise with the immense loss and hardship faced by the affected communities. By raising awareness and offering support, the Grade 9 students at VIS hope to contribute to the ongoing recovery efforts and bring relief to the survivors of this devastating earthquake.

Update: The students have raised 500 Euros for AFAD, which provides on the ground humanitarian relief for survivors of the earthquake. Thank you to everyone who bought baked goods, and generously donated money. If you still wish to make a donation to the humanitarian relief fund in Turkey, donations can be made directly through this link on the AFAD website.
