The energy in the room was entirely infectious, with our young performers displaying extraordinary skill, talent, courage, and an abundance of enthusiasm that left the audience both humbled and amazed.
This adventure began back in September of 2025 with initial workshops, long before anyone even knew which characters they would play. The script was meticulously adapted for this specific cast, and the final cast list was eagerly shared by mid-October. This uniquely VIS adaptation added its own delightful local flair to the classic tale, featuring hilarious touches ranging from Shrek being compared to a traditional Austrian Krapfen to the Three Little Pigs speaking German. These creative adjustments made the story uniquely ours while providing an incredible 52 students with the opportunity to take on individual speaking roles.
In total, the production involved a massive cast and crew of almost sixty Grade 5 students, who were expertly supported by nearly ten Secondary School students. Together, the cast, storytellers, and backstage team worked tirelessly to handle the production from all sides, whether performing under the spotlight or creating magic behind the scenes. The entire Primary School student body, along with quite a few Secondary students, had the opportunity to attend the performances, making it a true cross-divisional celebration of the arts.
The heart of Shrek Jr. reminds us all that true connection goes far beyond first impressions. Through iconic lines like "Let your freak flag fly!" and "What makes us special, makes us strong!", the story encourages us to love ourselves and others for who they truly are. It teaches our young learners that they do not have to fulfill the stories or stereotypes that people place upon them; instead, they can be exactly who they are and be incredibly proud of it.
An exceptional production like this serves as a powerful reminder of why school is so vital. It provides children with the space to learn about themselves, explore their unique talents and passions, create something entirely new with others, and share meaningful experiences with their peers and the wider community. In an increasingly digital world, the live magic of theatre is something our VIS students do not just watch, but genuinely experience and help bring to life.
