Our Power, Our Planet: VIS Celebrates Earth Day 2026

Earth Day is far more than a single day on the calendar; it is a vital opportunity to reflect on our daily habits and recognize the profound impact our collective actions have on the beautiful planet we call home.

This year, Vienna International School enthusiastically embraced the global Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet.” The theme serves as a powerful call to action, encouraging each of us to use our personal influence to dismantle unsustainable lifestyles and focus on the incredible potential we possess as individuals to restore our environment.

A Magical, Community-Wide Celebration

On that day, the VIS campus came alive with creativity and passion. The celebrations kicked off with a deeply moving performance by the Primary School Choir, with the song that made us reflect the beautiful planet in which we live, making this celebration a significant moment for the community. Together with the Artwork displays from Secondary School, it provided a magical frame to our celebration.

The Green Teams always present, invited our community to engage in an activity by creating seeds balls to plant them later at our biodiversity garden at school.

During the event, a young member of the Primary School Green Team took the microphone to deliver an inspiring message to the community:

"Earth Day shouldn't just be one day where we stop to think. We need to act every single day to restore our planet. It’s the little, simple things we do daily that truly make a lasting difference."

At VIS we learn all year different topics that are all interconnected and relate to our natural and human-made systems and how we can learn to use them better to achieve the sustainability needed for future generations.

Some classrooms engaged in moments of reflection, by reading a book and creating an opportunity to learn, like Grade Primary focusing on the recycling of paper. Other classes as part of our curricula engaged in learning about water filtration and how this occurs naturally through the water cycle.

Greening of our curricula, following the UNESCO guidelines, is supporting us to provide with an Eco Agenda that is enriching, facilitates the development of Green Skills and the mindset for a healthy, sustainable and peaceful life in our planet.

Every Step Counts: The VIS Global Citizen Commitment

As VIS global citizens, we know that monumental change starts with small, deliberate choices. The Earth Day celebrations concluded with a shared reminder of the everyday actions we can all take to minimize pollution and protect our resources:

  • Reduce food waste by taking only what we can eat.
  • Save energy by turning off lights and unplugging devices when not in use.
  • Recycle properly to keep waste out of landfills and oceans.
  • Minimize single-use plastics by choosing reusable alternatives.

Thank you to our Green Teams, educators, and students for making Earth Day 2026 a resounding success. Let’s carry this momentum forward, one sustainable step at a time!
