Danube Clean Up Initiative

Saturday, 6 May saw the final SA/CAS environmental clean-up on the banks of the Danube.

Students from Primary and Secondary School, parents, homeroom advisors, siblings and many furry friends all worked to clear up the trash and rubbish to improve the local environment for everyone in our community. This was the sixth and final clean up, with over 150 students from Grades 6-12 participating this academic year. It is wonderful to see so many of our students engaging with such an important global issue, and we hope to see them all continue.

Students found and carefully cleared many items that had been discarded and dumped on Donau Insel, including wheelbarrows, chairs, clothing and glass. Many of these items have been repurposed or upcycled if in good condition.

When asked what the most interesting thing that the students had found on their clean up, one Grade 11 student answered ‘friendship’, which demonstrates other benefits of service learning – such as collaboration and teamwork. Some of the Grade 6 students also talked about the warm feeling inside that you get when completing acts of service. We hope this encourages everyone in our community to engage with voluntary work and service.

We look forward to hearing about the impact our students and community members have on the environment over the summer, as well as seeing many returning and new students at next year’s clean ups!
