Celebrating Nature and Biodiversity at VIS

Outdoor Learning and Eco Projects Flourish in May

Throughout the month of May, VIS students embraced numerous outdoor learning experiences, connecting deeply with nature and the rich biodiversity found in our school’s green spaces.

Primary School students enthusiastically planted and cared for gardens, helped clean the campus, and enjoyed valuable time outdoors. Meanwhile, Secondary students participated in several ECO CAS projects, including refurbishing our ponds to enhance blue infrastructure and creating small meadows designed to support urban pollinators.

Curricular activities also brought students closer to nature. Grades 1 and 6 explored our Ecolab through pond dipping investigations, gaining firsthand knowledge of aquatic ecosystems. In addition, Grade 9 Spanish students established a new Mediterranean garden outside the Cafeteria. This garden provides fresh herbs for the Food Technology classes and encourages pollinators to thrive on campus.

Supporting biodiversity is a key focus of our Eco Schools programme. On Tuesday, 20 May, VIS celebrated Biodiversity Day 2025 with a special event featuring Early Learning and Grade Primary students performing the “Bee Dance,” accompanied by the Music Department. The celebration emphasized the importance of biodiversity and its role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. It highlighted the crucial interdependence between humans and the ecosystem services that biodiversity provides, such as pollination, a vital service supported by planting bee-friendly plants.

This month’s activities demonstrated how small, collective actions contribute to a sustainable future. Together, our community continues to nurture the natural world that sustains us all.
