Building Eco Bridges: VIS Welcomes Students and Educators from Greece

What began as an inquiry six months ago blossomed into a powerful cross-cultural exchange this week as Vienna International School welcomed a delegation from the 6th Gymnasium of Trikala, Greece. Traveling 1,400 km by bus as part of an Erasmus+ project, the delegation visited VIS to see firsthand how we integrate our Eco Agenda into daily learning and student experiences.

The visit underscored a vital truth in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD): true impact requires hands-on opportunities. Throughout the week, our guests immersed themselves in the VIS ecosystem, exploring how sustainability is woven into everything from our curriculum to our campus operations.

The educators from Trikala described the visit as an enriching and inspiring experience. They noted that the practical strategies observed at VIS would be instrumental in launching new initiatives in their own community, such as:

  • Urban Biodiversity: Strategies for increasing green spaces and supporting local ecosystems.
  • Species Protection: Developing focused projects to protect regional bird species.
  • Green STEM: Creating science and technology-based solutions to environmental challenges.
  • Circular Thinking: Promoting sustainable consumption patterns through circular economy principles.

The exchange was equally significant for our own VIS students. Acting as ambassadors for our school’s values, they led tours and discussions with confidence, sharing their personal learning journeys and explaining how their local actions contribute to a more sustainable world.

Our students did not just share information; they demonstrated the leadership and agency that our Eco School program aims to cultivate.

Since being designated an Eco School, VIS has become a destination for international educators seeking best practices in sustainability. This visit from the 6th Gymnasium of Trikala is the latest example of how our school is fostering a global network of educators and learners committed to the planet.

As our guests return to Greece to implement their new ideas, the connection between Trikala and Vienna remains a testament to the power of collaborative learning in the fight for a greener future.
