Biodiversity and Outdoor Learning at VIS

Vienna International School (VIS) recently spearheaded a gardening community action in the Primary School, furthering its commitment to environmental stewardship and promoting biodiversity.

The gardening action at VIS witnessed an impressive turnout, with more than 45 parents and their children eagerly participating in the event. Working alongside the Outdoor Learning Team, led by Mr. Rob Reed, families joined forces to cultivate a diverse range of vegetables in the school's dedicated vegetable gardens, planting a variety of vegetables in the school's vegetable gardens. In a concerted effort to support local wildlife, the community action also entailed the planting of more than 25 lavender plants around the school entrance. These fragrant additions were carefully chosen for their ability to provide a vital source of nectar for urban pollinators, such as bees and butterflies. By creating an inviting habitat for these essential creatures, VIS aims to contribute to the preservation and revitalization of local pollinator populations, thereby promoting a healthy and thriving ecosystem within the school environment.

By embracing Outdoor Learning Practices, VIS aims to enhance urban biodiversity, fortify green infrastructures on campus, and offer students valuable hands-on experiences that foster a deeper understanding of local and global environmental issues aligned with the school's Eco agenda.

Through the collaborative efforts of parents, children, and the Outdoor Learning Team, the event successfully fortified the school's vegetable gardens and introduced lavender plants to support urban pollinators. These endeavors exemplify VIS's commitment to integrating hands-on outdoor learning experiences into its curriculum, fostering a deeper understanding of environmental issues among students. By nurturing a sense of ecological responsibility and providing practical opportunities for engagement, VIS continues to make strides in creating a sustainable and eco-conscious community, as stated in its Eco School statute.
