During the week of 19 February, Vienna International School (VIS) embarked on a journey of cultural celebration and appreciation, aligning with the spirit of UNESCO Mother Language Day. Throughout the week, a series of vibrant events unfolded, underscoring the significance of mother languages as integral components of our school's rich cultural tapestry.
Amidst an atmosphere of warmth and inclusivity, parents and staff members gathered in the primary library to participate in a heartwarming tradition: reading stories in their native languages to eager students. From Greek to Polish, Arabic to Croatian, Spanish to Dutch, and beyond, students were treated to a captivating array of tales that resonated with the diverse linguistic heritage of our community. This immersive storytelling experience served as a powerful catalyst for students to embrace and celebrate the multitude of cultures and languages that converge within the walls of VIS.
As the week progressed, the festivities culminated in a delightful Friday morning celebration, where the VIS community came together to share breakfast delicacies from around the globe. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the students, parents, and staff of the VIS community who generously shared their special stories and culinary traditions. Their contributions enriched our collective experience and at the same time served as poignant reminders of the power of language and food to unite and inspire.
By promoting and celebrating mother languages, VIS is not only preserving cultural heritage and identity but also nurturing a culture of empathy, understanding, and appreciation for the myriad ways in which language shapes our perceptions of the world.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of these events, and for your unwavering support in fostering a community where diversity is celebrated and cherished. Together, we continue to embrace the beauty of linguistic and cultural diversity, forging bonds of understanding and respect that transcend linguistic barriers.
