Preparation

The VIS Medical Department is well staffed with a school doctor and two nurses. Over the summer the Medical Department got an additional permanent quarantine facility, was newly equipped with an additional sink and refurnished for separating the students experiencing sickness symptoms from other students, if necessary.

We work closely with the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health to collect the latest updates and guidelines in regards to COVID-19 evolution in Vienna and we are prepared to take the necessary steps indicated by the authorities to prevent the virus from spreading in our school.

Testing & Screening

Students should be screened by parents before they leave home. If the temperature of a student screened by their parents at home reveals a fever, coughing, shortness of breath or fatigue, the student should remain home and the parent should contact the GP or call 1450 for further instructions.

In addition, School is providing a temperature testing point at the entrance where students can be screened voluntarily upon their arrival.

A fever in itself is not an indicator of COVID-19.

If the temperature of a student screened at morning check-in or during the school day reveals a fever, the student will be referred to the Medical Department to assess if the case is a suspected COVID-19 case or not.

Vienna International School is in contact with the Ministry of Health regarding testing protocols to best ensure the health and safety of our community.

Testing might happen at school, with parental consent, if there is a positive confirmed COVID-19 case. In this scenario, the Health Authorites will inititate the testing of the close contacts of the confirmed case as soon as possible.

Event of Illness

Given the non-specific symptoms of a COVID-19 infection (sore throat, cough, fatigue, diarrhea, chills, headache, fever…), our school is following a no symtom policy.

Students who feel sick should stay home and contact their General Practitioner. Students who miss school for illness-related reasons for more than three consecutive days, will be required to provide a medical note to the Medical Department upon returning to campus.

If students or staff with COVID-19 related symptoms report to the Medical Department, the medical staff will assess whether the symptoms are indicative of a suspected case of COVID-19.

If it is a suspected case of COVID-19, the individual will be isolated at the Medical Department and the School will immediately contact the parents. The Medical Department will inform the local Health Authorities and follow their guidelines. Parents need to make sure they can be reached at anytime during the school day and must pick up their child within an hour at the latest after the call from school. If parents are asked to collect their child from the Medical Department, they will be provided further information there as to how to proceed. Depending on the time spent in class and the proximity to other individuals, the Health Authorities will recommend further actions to be taken.

The student suspected can return to school after providing a negative test result.

If a confirmed case is identified, the School will be immediately contacted by the Health Authorites and guided through the next steps.

  • We will communicate immediately with parents in this event.
  • The Ministry of Health will conduct all necessary contact tracing. Individuals in close contact with the infected individual will be notified and quarantined for 10 days.
  • The classroom and campus will be disinfected.

Families must inform the School if the GP or 1450 initiated a testing of family members because of COVID-19 related symptoms.

Families must inform the School immediately of any possible contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case.

Wellbeing

Counsellors at Vienna International School continue to collaborate very closely across the school. The counselling office is an integral part of school, and will be a visible presence throughout the coming year. The counselling team connects closely on an as-needed basis with students to provide comprehensive care for the community members.
